Bangladesh's RMG sector registered a 5.12 per cent Y-o-Y expansion, reaching $7.50 billion during the initial two months of the current fiscal year. According to Export Promotion Bureau metrics, the positive momentum was propelled by robust demand in Western markets, where knitwear and woven categories demonstrated steady recovery. Industry executives note that international buyers continue favoring local manufacturing hubs due to reliable lead times, even as global trade uncertainties persist.

Operational hurdles and financial realities

Despite favorable shipment values, manufacturing associations emphasize that severe energy shortages and elevated borrowing costs continue to compress factory profit margins. "Given the ongoing gas crisis, high interest rates, and adverse global trade conditions, this growth undoubtedly reflects the industry's capability and resilience, explains Mahmud Hasan Khan, President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association. Stakeholders maintain that structural utility reforms remain critical to sustaining medium-term production targets.

Boosting performance with sustainability

The Bangladeshi ready-made garment sector comprises thousands of export-oriented manufacturing units supplying mass-market and high-end apparel to global brands across the United States and Europe. Targeting diversified product lines and technological upgrades, the industry focuses on expanding value-added output, boosting financial performance through sustainable manufacturing practices, and reinforcing its historical standing as a premier global apparel supplier.
