In partnership with Asons and Italian finishing pioneer Tonello, Asahi Dyes and Chemicals has launched a $20.4 million advanced manufacturing facility at the Biyagama Export Processing Zone in Sri Lanka.

Designed to curb heavy reliance on imported chemical inputs, the project introduces localized production lines for high-performance textile dyes, printing agents, and finishing chemicals. The complex directly addresses persistent supply-chain vulnerabilities across South Asia, creating 281 local jobs while establishing a dedicated export corridor targeting markets throughout Asia and Southeast Asia.

Integrating sustainable processing technology

The facility integrates Tonello’s cutting-edge washing, dyeing, and laser processing systems into a unified research and development framework, enabling apparel brands to test chemical recipes and garment treatments prior to full-scale industrial runs. Built to strict LEED v4 BD+C green-building standards, the plant incorporates advanced wastewater treatment, energy optimization, and strict carbon-reduction measures. This facility contributes significantly to the vertical integration of the garment sector, transforming traditional manufacturing into a high-value, sustainable ecosystem, states Duminda Hulangamuwa, Chairman, Board of Investment of Sri Lanka.

Founded in 1932, Japan-headquartered Asahi Dyes and Chemicals is a specialty chemical producer with established operations across Japan, China, and Vietnam. The company specializes in sulfur chemistry, pharmaceutical intermediates, and high-performance textile dyes, with its recent Sri Lankan expansion reinforcing long-term regional growth and technological transfer strategies.
