Growth in premium running market fails to offset mass-market drag at Xtep

Xtep International Holdings recorded contrasting operational results across its retail portfolio in Q2, FY26. While the group's core mass-market brand suffered a mid-single-digit Y-o-Y decline in retail sales due to sluggish foot traffic and unseasonable weather, high-end technical footwear label Saucony achieved a low-single-digit increase. The divergence underscores an accelerating split in mainland China’s sportswear sector, where broad consumer spending on standard activewear remains constrained while demand for specialized, premium athletic gear demonstrates relative resilience.

Margin discipline over volume expansion

Saucony’s brick-and-mortar retail sales expanded by more than 20 per cent during the quarter. However, overall brand revenue was tempered by strict price controls under its ‘Brand 2.0’ repositioning initiative, which intentionally curtailed online promotional discounting. Industry analysts noted that while restricting digital markdowns temporarily slowed unit sales growth, the strategy successfully safeguarded gross margins and long-term brand equity. Across the group, channel inventory turnover held at a manageable 4.5 to 5 months, with average retail discounts remaining stable at 25 per cent to 30 per cent off list price.

Direct-to-consumer restructuring and outdoor expansion

To counter retail headwinds, Xtep is restructuring its brick-and-mortar foot print. The company plans to shutter roughly 500 underperforming locations by FY26-end, reallocating capital toward high-productivity direct-to-consumer flagship stores and expanding its technical outdoor apparel line. Prioritizing store productivity and brand equity over rapid door expansion remains essential in this operating environment, noted a senior Hong Kong retail equity analyst covering the consumer sector.

Founded in 1999, Hong Kong-listed Xtep International is a Chinese athletic footwear and apparel retailer operating a multi-brand portfolio led by its core label and licensed running brand Saucony. The company focuses on professional running and outdoor categories. Xtep targets steady full-year growth through store network optimization, direct-to-consumer operations, and retail expansion across Southeast Asia.
