In an unprecedented cross-industry collaboration, luxury conglomerates Kering and LVMH have entered a joint environmental initiative to safeguarding Italy’s historic textile and leather manufacturing hubs. Launched alongside environmental consultancy Etifor, the newly established Water Resilience Lab in Tuscany's Arno Basin addresses severe climate vulnerabilities across regional supply chains. The coalition targets systemic water stress, pollution, and severe flood risks that directly threaten high-end apparel production and local raw-material processing centers.

Data-driven restoration aims to protect industrial footprints

Recent environmental data highlights the financial urgency behind the partnership. Regional floods across Tuscany generated an estimated €1.89 billion in industrial and municipal damages during 2023 alone. To insulate shared manufacturing infrastructure, the Lab’s operational roadmap targets the retention of 48 million cu m of water across six high-risk zones, including key textile districts in the Ombrone and Bisenzio valleys. Environmental modeling indicates each cubic meter of retained water prevents approximately €157 in flood damage, establishing a direct commercial return on eco-restoration capital.

Strategic supply chain resilience replaces traditional sourcing

Textile finishing, dyeing, and tanning operations consume significant hydric resources, making localized watershed stability a critical operational risk for European apparel brands. Securing shared ecosystems isn't merely an ESG metric; it is an economic imperative to preserve the brand’s regional manufacturing heritage against compounding climate shocks, states Marie-Claire Daveu, Chief Sustainability and Institutional Affairs Officer, Kering. By aligning capital investments with public authorities and universities, the coalition creates a repeatable financial framework for water security across global textile corridors.

Watershed governance and infrastructure protection

The Water Resilience Lab - Arno Basin is a public-private environmental platform co-founded in late 2026 by Kering, Conservation International, and Etifor. Operating across Tuscany's premier leather and textile districts, the initiative aggregates private luxury capital to restore ecosystems, mitigate climate-induced flood damages, and stabilize industrial water infrastructu
