Tamil Nadu has launched the Technical Textiles Transformation Scheme (TTTS) alongside a Rs 10 crore allocation to establish the Tirupur Textiles Technology Centre (TTTC). The state initiative facilitates international research partnerships, technology transfers, and specialized mentorship to shift local manufacturers toward medical, automotive, and defense textiles. Tirupur currently produces nearly 90 per cent of India's cotton knitwear exports, but reliance on traditional garments leaves local suppliers vulnerable to global demand fluctuations. The new scheme bridges technical knowledge gaps for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), equipping facilities to process engineered synthetic filaments and protective fabrics.
Infrastructure upgrades mitigate operational bottlenecks
Moving beyond conventional cotton apparel demands substantial capital upgrades and green processing infrastructure. Under the Tamil Nadu Technical Textiles Mission, participating units receive milestone-based financial assistance covering up to 50 per cent of technical support fees, capped at Rs 50 lakh per enterprise. Early adopters like Tiruppur-based knitwear maker Loyal Textile Mills successfully integrated functional technical fabrics, expanding product offerings into flame-retardant industrial wear. Establishing a dedicated technology centre in Tirupur provides local MSMEs direct access to advanced machinery and international market intelligence, states Durai Palanisamy, Chairman, Southern India Mills' Association.
Targeting expanded technical textile output
Operating under the Department of Handlooms, Handicrafts, Textiles and Khadi, the Directorate of Textiles manages state industrial policy, infrastructure funding, and cluster development for Tamil Nadu's $25-billion textile ecosystem. The department targets expanded technical textile output and sustainable factory upgrades across regional manufacturing hubs like Tirupur, Karur, and Coimbatore.
