The northern Indian industrial heartland of Uttar Pradesh has reinforced its position as a major manufacturing powerhouse, recording a 10 per cent Y-o-Y increase in textile, apparel, and handicraft exports to nearly Rs 35,000 crore for the FY26. As the country's third-largest fabric manufacturer - accounting for roughly 13 per cent of domestic production - the state is aggressively transitioning from localized artisanal clusters to fully integrated global supply chains. During the recent state textile deliberations in Lucknow, industrial stakeholders secured investment proposals worth Rs 5,196 crore. The state government aims to develop the entire value chain in Uttar Pradesh, moving seamlessly from fiber to yarn, fabric to garment, and garment to branded retail for the international market, stated Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister.
Capturing high-value segments and modernizing export corridors
This export momentum is heavily anchored by key manufacturing epicenters such as Gautam Buddha Nagar, which alone contributed Rs 21,000 crore in FY26, alongside traditional handicraft and carpet strongholds across Varanasi and Bhadohi. State administrators are actively addressing logistics bottlenecks and raw material sourcing challenges by designating specialized textile parks in cities like Amroha, Bareilly, and Bijnor. Industry analysts note, integrating technical textiles - particularly for defense, healthcare, and performance sports sectors - alongside seventeen Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged product lines gives local exporters a distinct competitive edge in Western markets. Despite global freight pressures, robust employment pools comprising over 1.5 million textile workers and aggressive state capital incentives position the region for sustained double-digit growth.
A corner stone of India’s textile industry
Uttar Pradesh represents a cornerstone of India's textile industry, encompassing over 200,000 handloom and 500,000 powerloom weavers. Specializing in cotton fabrics, traditional handlooms, carpets, and ready-made apparel, the state targets accelerated global export integration, backed by robust institutional backing, specialized skill development schemes, and expanding industrial land banks.
