Surat's textile markets are getting negatively affected because of defaulters from Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Defaults worth over Rs 700 crores have been reported from these markets in the last five months. Industry insiders point out that almost 20 to 25 cases of defaults are being reported every month.

Their modus operandi involves renting shops at the textile markets under fake names, identity proofs and residential addresses, followed by placing huge orders after making first three payments on time and then disappearing seeking credit of four months. And when the victims lodge police complaints or approach Federation of Surat Textile Traders' Association (FOSTTA), there is not much, they are able to do since the people cannot be traced due fake identities.

According to Chairman of textile committee of Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), Devkishan Manghani, "There are over 165 textile markets housing more than 65,000 textile shops. Each market has been given the printed forms to be filled by those taking shops on rent. It is the responsibility of the textile markets and the shop owners to verify the details."

Though a slowdown in China, political unrest in Bangladesh and labour and other issues in Vietnam gave an opportunity to Indian textile exporters, the segment managed to expand its performance by just 8.2 per cent over the last three years. While the average annual growth rate of Chinese textile and clothing exports slowed to 6.1 percent since 2012 from as high as 20.1 per cent in 2011, India’s average expansion rate is just 8.2 percent against 15.8 per cent growth rate reported by Vietnam since 2012. Even Bangladesh, despite all the challenges it has been facing, has managed a growth rate of 7.8 per cent.

Experts have blamed lack of incentives, excessive emphasis on cotton fibre and handlooms by the government, flip-flop in raw material policy, faulty duty structure in the man-made fibre segment where imports of certain raw materials like PTA are taxed higher than those of finished products and inflexible labour laws as hurdles to the growth of the textile and apparel sector. The withdrawal of certain export incentives in the recently-announced foreign trade policy 2015-20 will further make a negative impact.

However, according to Texpreneurs, a forum formed by Tamil Nadu based textile entrepreneurs, against seeking sops from the government, which is preparing a report based on corporate economic advisor, Ritesh Kumar Singh’s suggestions on boosting textile exports through trade pacts, , a well-conceived trade pact can open up opportunities on the textile export front, but a badly negotiated free trade pact can lead to unintended consequences, like SAFTA (Agreement on South Asia Free Trade Area). Singh points out that with the WTO obligation forcing India to phase out all its export incentives for the textile sector by end of 2015, on the other hand the Indian textile industry and policy makers are too focused on export incentive scheme for export promotion, which does not augur well for the industry. “The key to survive in the long run would be to seek improved trade facilitation and basic infrastructure,” he asserts.

The event is showcasing the 2016 Spring/Summer collections made by textile entrepreneurs of Tirupur knitwear cluster. Among the exhibits are: knitted T-shirts, children’s wear, night wear, trendy dresses for women and trousers.

Though the fair is being held twice a year, for the last two decades, a large section of knitwear exporters feel that the fair needs to undergo changes according to the changing scenario and must become a better platform for B2B interactions between a wide base of foreign buyers and manufacturers.

The three-day fair has been organised by the Apparel Export Promotion Council, India Knit Fair Association and Tirupur Exporters Association. It is India’s biggest fair for knitted garments. The India Knit Fair offers the knitting and yarn industries the best manufactured equipments and raw materials. It features leading knitwear exporting organizations from all over India. It is a platform to build contacts, develop business prospects and work on major tie-ups and partnerships. Among visitors are designers, manufacturers, buyers, agents and celebrities from the fashion world.

Tirupur has 80 per cent share of India’s knitted garment exports. Knitted garments are 45 per cent of India’s total textile exports.

Milano Unica USA will convene in New York from July 20 to 22, 2015. It expects to host about 80 exhibitors. This is the first time Milano Unica will be held in New York. Milano Unica is a benchmark Italian textile trade fair.

From July 1 to 3, Milano Unica will hold the Milano Unica Precollezioni edition, focused on presenting pre-collections for Fall/Winter 2016-17 at Pavillion 3 of Fieramilanocity in Milan. The event will take place almost at the same time as Anteprima by Lineapelle, the specialised leather trend show, happening on July 2 and 3, 2015.

Another announcement recently made is that Stefano Fadda is the new creative director and trend commission responsible for Milano Unica textile trade show. With the upcoming editions in July and September 2015 of the Milano Unica shows presenting Fall/Winter 2016-17 novelties, the What’s Cool company, managed by Fadda, is researching and presenting new trend directions. The new creative director succeeds Angelo Uslenghi, visionary and forward thinking textile and trend specialist and 30-year long ambassador of Milano Unica.

Fadda has worked as art director, image, marketing and communication consultant for fashion and luxury goods including projects for Prada, Valentino, Giorgio Armani and Chanel.

As per latest figures from the Department of Commerce's Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA), volume of US apparel imports from all sources increased 24.5 per cent year-on-year in March, surging from its 0.2 per cent rise in February. Imports reached 2.27 billion sq. mtr. equivalents (SME), up from 1.83 billion SME in March last year.

Among individual exporting countries, shipments from largest exporter to US - China increased 54.5 per cent to 777 million SME in March and from Vietnam surged 42.84 per cent to 295 million SME, rebounding from the 1.5 per cent fall reported for the month of February. Apparel exports from Bangladesh rose 17.7 percent year-on-year to 171million SME, up on the 13.9 percent increase booked in February. Year-on-year gains were also registered by other countries like Honduras with 7.4 per cent to 99 million SME; Cambodia with 5 per cent rise to 113million SME; India exports up 8 per cent to 109 million SME; Mexico, 8.6 per cent to 87 million SME; and Pakistan exports increased 8.2 per cent to 53 million SME.

On the other hand, Indonesia and El Salvador recorded respective year-on-year declines of 1.5 per cent to 130million SME, and 0.8 per cent to 69million SME. Total US apparel and textile imports increased 7.4 per cent in the three months to March to reach 14.56 billion SME from 13.56 billion SME in the same period a year ago. Within this, textile exports saw 8.4 per cent rise to 8.25 billion SME, while apparel exports increased 6.1 per cent to 6.31billion SME.

Denim expo will be held in Bangladesh from May 11 to 12. The aim is to showcase Bangladesh’s potential in the denim industry globally as well as to share knowledge with international denim producers and buyers. The display aims to not only promote denim trade in Bangladesh but also encourage greater business practices to raise the living standards of people in this country.

About 25 exclusive denim and jeans related manufacturers and enterprises from the US, Spain, Japan, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Turkey, China, San Marino and Bangladesh will take part. Among the visitors are apparel entrepreneurs, businessmen, fashion professionals and stakeholders of the industry from Europe, US and UK. Any surplus fund from the expo will be donated to a seed fund for establishing a denim university in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is the second largest denim exporter to Europe while it is holding the third largest position in the US market. Around 400 factories export nearly 180 million pieces of denim jeans to the world.

With this expo the country hopes to be a one stop sourcing platform for the denim industry. The vision is to increase Bangladesh’s share in the global denim market to seven billion dollars by 2021.

Bangladesh surpassed China to become the largest exporter of woven garment items to India in 2014. The country's export share of woven garments to Indian market reached 29 per cent compared to that of 26.96 per cent by China. China, however, retained its position as the largest knit product exporter to the Indian market.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) says, Bangladesh exported woven products worth $85.73 million and knit items worth $27.88 million to India in 2014. But India imported woven items worth $80.04 million and knit products worth $93.63 million from China in the last calendar year. Bangladesh's top 10 woven items shipped to India in 2014 included men's suits, jackets and trousers worth $52.40 million while the country fetched $19.20 million by exporting men's shirts to the neighbouring country.

Similarly, top 10 knitwear items exported to India last year included T-shirts, singlets and vests worth $13.47 million while jerseys, pullovers and cardigans fetched $6.89 million. The country's total apparel exports to India stood at $113.61 million, showing a 31.12 per cent growth in 2014 compared to that of 2013, BGMEA data showed. Bangladesh's apparel export to India was only $16.06 million in 2010.

On the basis of garment products being exported to 180 countries and territories in the world, a Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association has claimed that country’s textile industry has been witnessing steady growth over recent years and pushing the country into one of the top textile exporters in the world. The textile and garment industry is one of the largest economic sectors in the country, consisting of 4,000 enterprises with a turnover of $20 billion a year.

The Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association says, Vietnam joined China, India, Turkey and Bangladesh in 2013 to become the world’s top five textile exporter with total textile and garment export value surpassing $22 billion. The export growth continued in 2014 with nearly 16 per cent increase reaching $24.5 billion. Now, Vietnam’s textile and garment industry is aiming at total exports of $28.5 billion in 2015.

Vietnam’s garment exports achieved impressive growth in major markets last year, registering a growth of 17 per cent in Europe, 12.5 per cent in the US, and 9 per cent in Japan. In value terms, Vietnam’s textile and garment sector is expected to double the size of production in next ten years.
The US is the largest market for Vietnam’s textile and garment exports so far, and Vietnam is the second largest textile and garment exporter for the US market behind China. The EU is the second-largest importer of Vietnam’s textile and garment exports.

Though the industry is facing oversupply situation at the moment, Indian spinners are focusing on building capacities expecting pick-up in demand from both the domestic and export markets for cotton yarn. Currently, it has an overall installed capacity of 50 million spindles, to which 10-15 per cent more is expected to be added in the next one year. Of the the yarn spinning capacity of 50 million spindles, about 45 million are functional. Capacity utilization is estimated at 75 per cent, due to oversupply.

In an analysis on the yarn industry, the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy said, “We expect the growth in yarn production to increase in 2015-16 by 4.8 per cent to 4.3 million tonnes.” The capacity addition will majorly take places in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Telangana.

While the industry bodies like Texprocil were asking government to direct Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) to release of almost 50,000 cotton bales a day to bring down shortage in the domestic market, the CCI Chairman BK Mishra has said that the shortage claimed that there is no shortage of cotton bales in the domestic market. “That the market is facing a shortage of cotton is a misnomer. While India is expecting a bumper harvest of 40 million bales in the current year through September, as estimated by the Cotton Advisory Board, exports have crashed due to a slowdown in top buyer China, so there is ample cotton available in the domestic market,” Mishra said. An event that will see participation from over 80 exhibitors and 1,500 visitors, an initiative of the IAAI, Galleria Intima 4.0 now moves to New Delhi. The show will be organszed on a much larger scale showcasing all product categories with focus on OEMs, private label manufacturers and packaging companies. Through this annual gathering, IAAI hopes to realise the potential of these categories of intimate apparel sector and bring about greater collaboration, utilisation of resources and global recognition between these industry stakeholders and partners in the manufacture-supply chain, brands and buyers.

The show had a humble beginning with only about 32 exhibitors in 2012 and expanded to attract over 60 exhibitors that included countries like China, Bangladesh, Thailand, Italy, France, USand Turkey, to name a few at the last edition. Besides a strong showcase by exhibitors, the third edition also witnessed a visitor footfall of about 855 that included about 500 brands from India besides first-time and regular trade visitors and buyers. This year too, Galleria Intima is expecting to see a return of majority of its participants as well as new members.

Planning to highlight the ‘Make in India’ initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Galleria Intima will provide a platform to network for trade visitors, exhibitors and buyers. In the past, visitors to the fair included intimate apparel brands, manufacturers, buying houses, import/export houses, fashion designers, fashion institutes and other stakeholders of the industry. Besides bringing together brands, manufacturing and supplier community, the two-day show will also include educational workshops and seminars as well as white paper presentations by seasoned industry insiders and professionals from India and abroad.

Another highlight is the facilitation of trade talks and enquiries as well business meetings between visitors and buyers. These pre-planned meetings are highly subject-centric and are aimed at industry associates who are short of time but want to network with the big players of the intimate wear world. The trade show’s list of highlights also includes the showcase of the best in manufacturing and technological skills with innovations and machineries on display.
