Samarth Scheme extended to boost textile skills

The Samarth Scheme, a demand-driven and placement-oriented initiative by the Ministry of Textiles, has been extended for two more years, covering FY 2024-25 and 2025-26, with a budget allocation of Rs 495 crore. This program aims to train 3 lakh individuals in textile-related skills, focusing on job creation within the organized textile and related sectors, excluding spinning and weaving.

The scheme's curriculum has been updated to align with the evolving technological and market demands, offering both entry-level training and upskilling/reskilling programs. These initiatives target the Apparel & Garmenting segments and traditional textile sectors such as handloom, handicraft, silk, and jute, enhancing the productivity of existing workers.

Implemented through various partnersincluding textile industry associations, government agencies, and sectoral organizations like DC/Handloom, DC/Handicrafts, the Central Wool Development Board, and the Central Silk Board, the scheme has already made significant strides. So far, 3.27 lakh candidates have been trained, with 79.5 per cent securing employment. Notably, the program places a strong emphasis on women's participation, with 88.3 per cent women trained to date.

The extension of the Samarth Scheme is a critical step in addressing the skill gaps in the textile sector and enhancing employment opportunities, especially for women, thus fostering growth in this vital industry.
